Wow, what an experience! I've heard from so many people how a mission trip is "a life changing experience" but it took me going to Macedonia to completely understand. I'd been on a mission trip in my early 20's, we went to Mexico and did a vacation Bible school for some children and taught dental hygiene to the people of a small town. I was very young and was not as fully committed to serving our Lord as I should have been at the time.
On the afternoon of December 30 7 of us flew out of Atlanta/Hartsfield Airport on an overnight flight to Zurich. The flight was nearly empty so most of us were afforded the opportunity of two or three seats each to spread out and sleep. As per my norm, I didn't really sleep a wink on the flight. I did doze off a couple of times but the sleep was not restful at all. After a brief layover in Zurich we hopped onto an Air Macedonia flight to Skopje. This leg of the trip was uneventful but the food had much to be desired, even for airline food. Blech! When we landed in Skopje Joan and Nikola were there to pick us up. Later that afternoon, Nikola swung by the hotel and we piled into his car and a cab and drove off to RamStore which is the brand new local mall where we had a bite to eat and then went and picked up a few things for the New Year's party at the church.
The Party consisted of lots of food, some worship music with a band and they invited Ryan, our group leader up front to play drums during the worship time. There was a message and then we sat around tables and prayed in the new year. We were sort of mixed up amongst the tables and it was really wonderful even though I didn't understand the Macedonian words being prayed.
